Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition: 3 Million Downloads and Counting

I’ll just say it: Minecraft’s popularity is exploding.

It’s no secret that Minecraft and Xbox LIVE are best buddies. I mean, even before Minecraft was available on Xbox 360, there were almost always multiple Minecraft clones in the most popular downloads section.

So it should surprise no one that Minecraft was insanely popular when it finally did come to the 360 in May. What is surprising, though, is just how popular the voxel-based mining and exploring game actually is. It’s the most popular game on XBL by a massive landslide.

According to a tweet sent out by Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson, the game has crosses the “3 million sales” mark. The next popular game on XBL? Castle Crashers at over 2.6 million, according to Gamasutra (though this number is admittedly a couple months old by now). Now, this seems like a tiny margin at first glance, but you have to keep in mind that Castle Crashers has had almost 4 years to reach this amount (it launched in August of 2008). Minecraft did it in two months. And we’re willing to bet it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. (Then again, we would think that. We love that game!)

Isn’t it time we moved on to other games, you say? Hold on, I’ll answer that question later. I have a lava-filled moat I need to finish building.
