Minecraft was built with support for modifications, or mods, from the beginning. As a result, there are hundreds of Minecraft mods available to download. However, not all mods are meant for gameplay purposes; some mods, like the Minecraft Audio Mod, are tools to help other players make modifications.
As the name implies, AudioMod is a mod that allows you to change the sounds in Minecraft, whether it is for your personal game or for a mod you are working on.
The most defining feature of this mod is that it includes CodecIXBM; this tool allows you to use XM, S3M and MOD files in Minecraft, in addition to the currently supported sound file types. CodecIXBM is the creation of Paul Lamb, the creator of Minecraft’s entire sound system, and this mod uses CodecIXBM with his blessing. The mod allows you to change every aspect of Minecraft’s sounds: the ambient music that plays throughout the game, the sounds the game makes and it even allows you to add custom records to the game to play on the in-game sound system.
For example, imagine you are designing a mod that introduces new enemies into Minecraft. Using the original sounds that ship with Minecraft wouldn’t sound right; after all, if you were to hit a rat you wouldn’t want it to make zombie sounds. AudioMod allows you to use your own sounds so that when the rat is hit, it makes the appropriate rat sounds that you have added to the game. The Minecraft Audio Mod is a staple of many popular Minecraft mods so chances are you have seen it in action without even realizing it.
Using AudioMod is extremely simple as your new sounds go straight into folders found within the Mods folder. For music, you place the new music inside the Music folder while for sounds you place them straight into the Sound folder. AudioMod couldn’t be easier to use which is excellent news for both the novice and professional modder.
It is not possible to change all sounds using AudioMod; currently, it is not possible to use custom sounds for water or the sound the game makes when you click a menu. However, AudioMod is continually updated so it’s only a matter of time before these features are added.
