How to install Minecraft texture packs
If there is one thing that Minecraft is well-known for, it is the ability to modify, or mod, any aspect of the game. Whether it is a major change like adding new gameplay elements or a minor change such as adding new graphics, anything is possible when it comes to modding Minecraft. There are hundreds of thousands of texture packs available for Minecraft; however, installing a texture pack is not really an intuitive process. Fortunately, it is also not as difficult as it might sound.
- Obtain the texture pack
In order to install a Minecraft texture pack, you need to have it on your computer to begin with. Download the texture pack you want to a folder that you’ll remember on your computer; your desktop makes an ideal location. Click here to find some awesome texture packs.
- Automatically open the folder
Unlike other games, where you must close all folders before you begin playing, you can modify Minecraft’s folders while the game is running. Run Minecraft and navigate to the main menu; if you already were in the middle of playing, save and exit to the main menu. From the main menu, click on the “Texture Packs” menu option followed by “Texture Pack Folder.” This opens the folder on your hard drive that Minecraft uses to house your texture packs. If the folder does not open, proceed to the next step. Otherwise, skip to Step 4.
- Manually open the folder
If Minecraft didn’t find the texture pack folder for you, you’ll need to hunt it down. The exact folder will vary depending on your operating system:
- Windows: %AppData%\.minecraft\texturepacks
- Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/texturepacks
- Linux: ~/.minecraft/texturepacks
- Finish installing
Drag the texture pack zip file you downloaded earlier into the Minecraft texture pack folder; make sure to leave the texture pack in its original zip format. After a few seconds you should see the name of the texture pack appear in the list of texture packs on the Minecraft menu screen. From there, just click the texture pack and click “Done” to return to the main menu.
- Load your world
Load your Minecraft world or generate a new one to marvel at your newly installed texture pack.
